What is an Out-Wintering Pad?

An Outwintering Pad (OWP) is a low cost,  alternative method of housing cattle compared to traditional sheds/slatted units.  OWPs have been used by cattle and dairy farmers in New Zealand for the past 20 years. An OWP provides for an outdoor drained lying area for cattle on a woodchip bed which is underlain by an impermeable liner (compacted subsoil or a geomembrane liner). Effluent generated on the OWP drains to a slurry storage facility such as a earth lined or geomembrane lined slurry store.

Parkmore Environmental Services are nationally approved to assess a site for an OWP design, in full compliance with current legal requirements of the Department of Agriculture.

What is an Earth Lined Slurry Store?

An Earth Lined Slurry Store (ELS) is a low cost method of storing slurry compared to traditional concrete or steel tanks. An ELS is formed by using excavated subsoil or suitable imported material to form surrounding banks and the subsoil liner. The subsoil liner is constructed using compacted soil. The tank may be used to store slurry, farmyard run-off, dairy washings and effluent generated from OWPS.

An ELS requires full planning permission which legally requires a Site Suitability Assessment to be completed by a suitably qualified person. Parkmore Environmental Services are nationally approved to assess sites for ELS design, in full compliance with the current legal requirements of the department of agriculture.
